The Importance of Role Models PSA

Photo Credit: Behind the Scenes of Filming the PSA video

Most kids these days tend to not think about having a role model in their life to motivate them to follow their dreams. In my Public Service Announcement (PSA) video, The message on how important it is for kids growing up in following their dreams is crucial for a kid’s development in the real world and what they want to be when they grow up. Therefore, having a role model is important to one day become a role model. Willy, aka little Bob Richey, talked about how he idolized former Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Duke, Mike Krzyzewski, also known as Coach K, and how his role model gave him the idea of being a coach one day. Then, we get introduced to Bob Richey today, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Furman, and using what he’s learned since he was little in dreams of becoming a coach into now becoming a role model for others. He emphasizes that hard work pays off when you have good role models in your life, and it motivates you to give back for others.

Filming this video was a lot of fun to make and edit. The two main actors I had portrayed in this video were very easy and fun to work with and made the filming process feel quicker than it was. However, once I got the b-roll clips of Bob Richey in his element during a Furman men’s basketball game, I was itching to edit and compile the story together.

The filming, editing, and producing of this PSA has taught me a lot that I will use in my later projects one day when I work in the sports media industry. I learned that getting things done weeks before the deadline helped me in getting the clips that I needed. I also learned that it’s okay to tell your actors to do multiple takes to get the right soundbite for the video. Overall, I had a blast making this video and hopefully the people that watch it will understand what it’s like to be a role model to the younger generation.
