Taylor Michael: The Next Ron Burgundy

As Ron Burgundy from the movie ‘Anchorman’ once said, “Don't act like you're not impressed.” Having the opportunity to sign up to help with a FUNC taping, I didn’t know what to expect, nor I had no idea what they wanted me to do in order to help. After entering the studio, I sat in a chair for five minutes, and then I hear a voice saying, “Taylor, you’re an anchor tonight.” Wearing no makeup, I looked at them like they were crazy, but I was up for the task to get some practice into being in front of the camera.

Multiple bright lights were shining on my face, I heard the 3, 2, 1, countdown, and I prepared my “pageant girl smile”, I felt like I was ready to anchor the show. We were discussing topics like Hurricane Fiona, Greek life events happening on campus, upcoming CLP events, and many other topics. However, I thought production was going to take way longer than I thought. Two takes for the whole show, and then we were done.

However, during the process of taping the show for FUNC, the FUNC production crew emphasized to me:

  • Never slouch. Always make sure you have good posture when you’re talking

  • Do not move around too much because it gets distracting to viewers

  • Have a positive tone when speaking on camera

  • Never stop even if you mess up. Just keep going and forget you messed up

  • Speak slowly because you’re actually talking a lot faster than what actually is heard in your head

Throughout the time I was taping with FUNC, I’ve learned to value the amount of preparation, production, and editing it takes to run a student program. Only with a limited amount of people that consistently show up at FUNC, I learned that more students should be involved with the production, especially anyone who wants to pursue a broadcasting career. From what I learned when helping with FUNC, it grew the inspiration for me to one day join FUNC as well. It’ll help me learn how to be consistent with producing weekly sportscasts for a production company just like I would possibly in the future if I decide to pursue a broadcasting career.
