Flying Around Furman

When it came to learning about different aspects of media and the multiple uses of camera work, I never thought I would be able to have a chance to fly a drone on the side of Furman Hall and record in the air. Before flying the drone, I’ve never had an opportunity to do something like this. I’ve seen fun drone videos that go on occasionally around campus and was always curious if I will ever have a chance to do that one day. When I heard we were flying drones, my eyes lit up with excitement.

I knew it was going to be easy to fly the drone when I saw the remote control, and it was so fun to see the drone fly up in the air. I learned how to control the drone since there was a lot of wind trying to fly it away since it was so light and small. However, the most difficult thing about flying the drone with the wind was landing it back onto the landing pad for other people to use and trying to not get it in the grass because it would mess up the propeller.

Overall, I thought the experience was very fun and helpful for me to learn more about drone flying and using it with video work. Learning different kinds of shots, I can do for future film projects can be a good skill to know if I need to do a landscape shot of a certain place. It’s a good way to get perspective shots, as well as pan shots. I can’t wait to use the drone again for projects, and one day, I want to invest in getting my own.
